Puncture vine is an annual herbaceous plant of the Zygophyllaceae family.
The root is relatively thin, spindly. The stems are numerous (up to 5-10 more) branches, with rare upright hairs, green to brownish, creeping, reaching 1 – 2 m long.
The leaves are complex, mantled, consecutive, 3-5 cm long, 1-2 cm wide, with 4-7 pairs of petals that are up to 1 cm long. They are elliptical, slightly asymmetrical, dark green top, whitish green underneath, with white hairs.
The flowers are relatively small, single, located in the bosom of the leaves. The fruit after the ripening disintegrates into 5 walnuts. Blooms and fruits in July – October.
It is found in sandy and stony places like a weed in the vineyards, anywhere in the warmer parts in Bulgaria. The uniqueness of Bulgarian tribulus terrestris is due to its specific location, climate, relief, method specificity and time of collection. It has been prouved that the broad spectrum and high content of active substances in the Bulgarian Tribulus Terrestris are not found in any plant growing elsewhere in the world.
Used part of plant is the herb. Picking July – September. Cut the stems of the plant during flowering.
Puncture vine containing caffeine diocogene, giogenin and xlopogenein, cognac and epophene; cyclodextrin, cyclopentadienol, phenylephrine, cyclopentane, phenylacetic acid, pyrazine; alkaloids, saponins. Saponins are chemical compounds in Tribulus terrestris, and they are thought to be responsible for its health benefits. One of the main chemical compounds found in Tribulus terrestris is protodioscin.
In folk medicine it is used for blood purification and smear as a diuretic and against constipation.
