Seeds, whole and powder form.
Chemical Constituents: alkaloids chiefly caffeine, tannins (rich in oligomeric proanthocyanidins=OPC), flavonoids (catechins), starch (very rich), saponins, and fat.
Properties: stimulant of the central nervous system (due to caffeine), astringent and antioxidant (due to OPC and catechins). It acts slower than coffee because caffeine is combined with tannins.
Uses: Internally it is used for short-term decreased mental and physical performance. It is a strong heart brain and body stimulant acting also as general anti depressive and intestine regulatory agent.
In folk medicine, it is used as a stimulant and a tonic.
