Devil’s Claw Root ( Harpagophytum procumbens )

Product Description

Devil’s Claw Root: The Powerful Medicinal. Accustomed to living in very harsh conditions, the devil’s claw plant is predominately found in the Kalahari Desert. Within its roots it stores abundant levels of moisture and nutrients and this is the part of the plant, which is harvested for a multiple of health uses. The roots should be consumed, or they can be ground down to a powder, or made into a tea. There are no known non-medicinal uses for devil’s claw root.

Devil’s Claw Root for Arthritis

One of its most common applications is that of pain relief for those suffering from arthritic conditions. Scientists don’t fully understand the exact mechanism of its pain relief-giving properties but speculate that its compounds, known as iridoid glucosides, are responsible for its anti-inflammatory effect, in particular harpagoside. Those iridoid glucosides are also believed to give devil’s claw root an antioxidant effect too. As well as arthritis and osteoarthritis, the anti-inflammatory action of devil’s claw root means other inflammatory disease may respond well with its treatment such as gout or IBD.

Devil’s Claw Root for digestion

Its reputation as a powerful digestive tonic, means supplementing with devil’s claw root can help maintain a healthy digestive system. It’s a rich source of flavonoids and phytosterols, which have an antioxidant and antispasmodic effect and it also stimulates the production of bile. Thanks to anti-inflammatory properties it may also help provide relief from heartburn and the symptoms of an upset stomach. The bitter taste of devil’s claw root comes from compounds which are thought to increase levels of stomach acid and so relieve indigestion and stimulate the appetite.

Devil’s Claw Root for weight loss

There is some, limited, suggestion that devil’s claw root may help those struggling with their weight. The herb is believed to interact with the hormone ghrelin – known as the hunger hormone, it’s main function is to send signals to the brain when it’s time to eat by increasing appetite.
