Wintergreen (Gaultheria fragrantissima) is a species of aromatic shrub belonging to the Ericaceae family and the genus Gaultheria. This species is native to south and southeast Asia and is found in Nepal, India, Bhutam and other Himalayan regions. It is a low-growing evergreen shrub that typically reaches 0.5-1.5m in height and thrives in cool, temperate climates at altitudes ranging from 1500-2700m. The essential oil of Gaultheria fragrantissima is extracted by steam distillation of the fermented leaves.

Its harvesting season generally takes places from late summer to autumn, depending on altitude and local climatic conditions.
