This species is native to Europe, North America, and parts of Asia and is found in Nepal, India, China, and other temperate regions. It is a slow-growing coniferous shrub or small tree that typically reaches 2–10 m in height and thrives in well-drained soils at altitudes ranging from 1500 to 4200 m, depending on climatic conditions.
The essential oil of Juniperus communis is extracted by steam distillation of the dried ripe berries.
Its harvesting season generally takes place from September to November, when the berries are fully mature, depending on altitude and local climatic conditions.
