Chayote is a gourd plant proves that you should not judge a food by its appearance. This odd-looking pear-shaped gourd is lumpy and green (and sometimes prickly) with crunchy flesh inside that you can pair with just about anything. Chayote is green and pear-shaped with a white inner flesh that has a mild flavor and a texture that is often described as being somewhere between a cucumber and a potato. What does it taste like? It’s mild, sweet, juicy and crisp. Many people say it reminds them of jicama.
Other names for chayote in English include vegetable pear, mirliton squash or chocho. In Latin America, it also goes by many other names including papa del aire, cayota, chocho, and chuchu. It is rich in vitamin B complex, vitamin C , iron, potassium and phosphorus which are shown to provide several health benefits such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidants, anti-hypersensitivity and often used in the treatment of inflammation and circulatory system disorders.
