Product Description
To many, the dandelion is nothing more than a pesky weed, but for those in the know, this hardy plant is a valuable source for herbs, medicines, teas and more. Making itself at home anywhere it can find a small patch of earth and enough sun, the dandelion is a common sight in British gardens.
The dandelion’s official name is Taraxacum officinale – the second word referencing its official listing as a medicine. From 1888 right up until 1965 dandelion was named in the United States National Formulary, while the dried root of this plant is listed in the United States Pharmacopoeia. The entire plant and its components have been used for its medicinal and nutritious benefits, which some claim to aid everything from the liver through to soothing bee stings.
Dandelion has been known for its curative properties
This plant is highly nutritious and contains a host of vitamins and minerals including potassium, iron, magnesium, zinc, B vitamins and carotenoids. It’s widely regarded for its ability to cleanse the bloodstream and increase bile production, making it useful for supporting the liver in particular. It has also been used as a remedy for other issues relating to the pancreas, kidney, spleen and stomach as well as being a good overall tonic. The herb also claims diuretic properties as a good source of potassium; it’s considered a safe remedy as levels of this nutrient lost through its diuretic action are replenished.
Dandelion and cooking
No part of the dandelion plant goes to waste as it can be eaten in its entirety. The root can be roasted for teas or dried for a coffee substitute, the leaves added to a salad and the yellow flowers consumed raw or cooked. Dandelion flowers have traditionally been used in winemaking. The flowers can be bitter tasting, but this can be reduced by using young, fresh leaves or steaming them gently.
Dandelion and beauty
The powdered product of the dandelion leaf can be blended in creams and lotions, which is said to help calm minor skin irritations and blemishes. The juice from its hollow stem and the leaves are considered to be the most potent for topical use – it has been known to see off warts and calluses and soothe skin sores and insect stings.
