The mastic tree, or pistachio mastic, or pistachio mastic (Latin Pistacia lentiscus) is a plant of the sumac family (Anacardiaceae), a species of the genus Pistachio, common in the Mediterranean countries. The range extends from the Canary Islands, Morocco and Spain in the west to Turkey, Syria and Israel in the east.
Resin, mastic (or mastix), is obtained from male trees. Mastic contains more than 90% resins and resin acids, 1-3% essential oil.
A rare and hard to find component. Indispensable for creating bright accents, a good fixative.
